After Whiteness: An Education in Belonging (audio)

Posted on October 14, 2021 by PLT Staff

Description: Virtual lecture given by Professor Willie James Jennings, as part of the Lift Every Voice and Teach workgroup (October 9, 2021). Jennings explains how he wrote his book After Whiteness: An Education in Belonging (Eerdmans, 2020) after trying to make sense of something amiss in the predominantly white academic world. That something was the overarching image of a white, self-sufficient man that Western education pushes those in the academy to become. Jennings proposes an alternative image of Jesus and the crowd, at the heart of which is a fundamentally different kind of cultivation that draws people together. Jennings ultimately hopes that After Whiteness can generate a conversation that changes everything, especially the formation of and teaching life of professors.

Excerpt: “The older I get, the more I appreciate those who are on this journey we call teaching, this journey we call higher education, and we do so with the name ‘Christian’ around them. So, I am glad to be in the presence of my siblings.”
