In this article, the author writes about the creation of Freedom Schools, educational communities created in makeshift locations that support educational experiences that challenge quotidian southern culture. He sets out three curriculums that Freedom Schools will abide by: an academic curriculum that centers on elementary reading, writing and mathematics, but emphasizes, above all else, a love of learning; a citizenship curriculum that focuses on identity and social change; and a recreational curriculum that focuses on the arts and self-expression. The author stresses his hope that the schools will breed future leaders.
