Lecture given by John de Gruchy at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. De Gruchy shares the ideas expressed in his book, Led into Mystery: Faith Seeking Answers in Life and Death, which he wrote after the death of his eldest son. He explores the relationship between grief, hope and faith in coping with death as a Christian, and the role of silence in grief and the mystery of God with us. The lecture begins at the 7:00 minute mark. Excerpt: “God is silent so often not because God is absent, but because God grieves with us. God knows even more than we do that grief is beyond words. Our inhumanity to others, our crimes against humanity, our unbearable suffering, reduces God to silence. But it is not a silence of uncaring absence, it is a silence of solidarity in suffering, a presence beyond words.”
