God First Loved Us: Reflections on the Theological Grounds of Liberation
Posted on May 7, 2015 by PLT Staff
Lecture given by Roberto Goizueta at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. Goizueta explores the theological significance of liberation and the option for the poor in the context of Latin American and U.S. Latino Catholic communities. He argues that “liberation” is a core concept of the lived faith of the poor, and that their form of popular Catholicism reflects a worldview that is fundamentally at odds with modern and postmodern theologies. Excerpt: “Ultimately, then, the preferential option for the poor represents a call to conversion. To be in solidarity with the poor is to be transformed by the same God who accompanies the poor. If taken seriously, then, the preferential option for the faith of the poor overturns contemporary assumptions about the possibility of preferring one truth-claim, one option over others.”
