A Seminar on Faith and Writing
Posted on April 3, 2015 by PLT Staff
Recording of a lecture given by Carlene Bauer as part of the June 2013 Virginia Seminar in Lived Theology in Charlottesville, Virginia. The lecture begins at the 11-minute mark, after an introduction by Charles Marsh. Bauer begins by reading an excerpt from her novel Frances and Bernard and giving background about the two books she has written. She then discusses the difficulty of writing about faith in a world of technology, short attention spans and cynicism.
Excerpt: “It’s hard in these very rational times to speak of feelings as a force that comes from outside yourself and moves through you…. In our culture it seems that to have faith in anything other than the reliable comforts of irony and cynicism is suspect.”
