SILT 2005 Participants
The Spring Institute for Lived Theology (SILT): The Spirit of Social Hope brought together thirty-five theologians, graduate students, pastors, and community-builders for a three day seminar inspired by the collaborative exchange between SILT participants and our Institute speakers: Jürgen Moltmann and Mark Gornik.
Moltmann is Professor of Theology Emeritus at the University of Tübingen, Germany and author of numerous influential books, including Theology of Hope, The Spirit of Life: A Universal Affirmation, The Trinity and the Kingdom, and Experiences in Theology. At the 2005 Spring Institute, Professor Moltmann's seminars were based on his book, The Source of Life (1997).
Mark Gornik previously served as the founding pastor of New Song Community Church in Baltimore, Maryland and is now director of City Seminary of New York. Gornik’s talks were based on his experiences as a pastor and community-builder, which he has probed theologically in his book, To Live in Peace: Biblical Faith and the Changing Inner City.
The Spring Institute for Lived Theology built upon the foundations of the first cycle of the Project on Lived Theology by deliberately pairing theologians and pastor/practitioners in a concentrated exchange that moved beyond insular academic debates and embraced theological life as a form of public discipleship. The activities of the first three years of the Project confirmed the necessity of its mission: that theological and religious scholars and activist-practitioners need one another to more fully participate in the work of building just and redemptive communities. The Spring Institute convened a diverse ensemble of scholars, students and practitioners from April 26-29, 2005 for conversation, collaboration, stimulation and refreshment.
