Christine Pohl

Associate Professor of Church in Society (Asbury Theological Seminary). B.S. (Syracuse University); M.A. Theological Studies (Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary); Ph.D. (Emory University).

Professor Pohl's areas of expertise include Christian social ethics, Church in society, urban ministry and Christian hospitality. She brings significant experience in urban ministry, public policy and women's issues. She is the author of Making Room: Recovering Hospitality as a Christian Tradition (Wm. B. Eerdmans, 1999). Contemporary socio-ethical and medical concerns, Christian hospitality, moral betrayal, and abortion and public policy are topics of her recent journal articles, essays and presentations. Articles by Professor Pohl have been published in the Annual of the Society of Christian Ethics, Bioethics and the Future of Medicine and Living Responsibly in Community. Current areas of research and writing include the relationship between Christian beliefs and practices, and evangelical women in theological studies.

Prior to her appointment at Asbury, Pohl served as director of program development at a church in metropolitan New York, she coordinated services to a large community of refugees. She served on the national administrative staff of Bread for the World Educational Fund in New York and wrote and edited materials concerning hunger and public policy; a selection of Bible studies on the topic were published as Hunger and Oppression/Justice and Hope (Bread for the World, 1982).

Professor Pohl is active in various social ministries, including the Christian Center for Urban Studies, Brick by Brick United Methodist Church in Lexington, Kentucky, Asbury's Kingdom Conference.
