The Lived Theology and Power Workgroup

Russell Jeung

Assistant Professor of Sociology (Foothill College, Los Altos Hills, CA). B.A. Human Biology (Stanford University); M.A. Education (Stanford University); Ph.D. Sociology (University of California, Berkeley).

Professor Jeung's primary scholarly interest involves the intersection of race and religion within the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) context. Currently, he is working with the Pacific Asian North American (PANA) Institute on a study of API youth ministries.

Rutgers University Press will publish Professor Jeung's book, New Asian American Churches: The Religious Construction of Race, which is based on his dissertation research. An article based on his church organizing work with Southeast Asian families entitled, "In the House: Southeast Asian Youth and Their Multiple Identities," will be published in Intersections and Divergences: Contemporary Asian Pacific American Communities, an upcoming anthology by Temple University Press.

For the past nine years, Jeung has lived at Oak Park Apartments, an apartment complex that is the home of several Latino and Cambodian families. He and his low-income neighbors have organized to win a landmark housing lawsuit and to improve the conditions of their neighborhood. New Hope Covenant Church and Harbor House, a Christian non-profit, have been instrumental in this effort.

In April 2002, Professor Jeung will marry Joan Kim. Together the two hope to continue their community organizing through New Hope Covenant Church.
